The Friendly Friendship Social Anxiety Mixer: A Night of Courage, Connection, and Community

On Friday, August 1st, from 7 to 9pm, something quietly magical happened at Fountain House Gallery: the Friendly Friendship Social Anxiety Mixer. Designed for folks who often find social gatherings more nerve-wracking than energizing, this event flipped the script—creating a space where anxiety could take a back seat and connection could take the wheel.

First, a huge shoutout to Fountain House for generously providing the venue, equipment, and catering. Their support helped set the tone: welcoming, warm, and worry-free. Ten volunteers arrived early, gathering in a pre-event huddle where the mission was clear—turn down the anxiety, turn up the social. Their job wasn’t to push anyone into small talk Olympics, but to gently support those who wanted to connect and respect those who needed space.

Volunteers scanned the room for folks who looked a little unsure or hesitant. If someone clearly wanted to be left alone, that wish was honored—no pressure, no awkward hovering. But if someone gave the tiniest “maybe,” volunteers were ready to reappear like friendly ghosts of encouragement.

The crowd was beautifully diverse—different ages, backgrounds, and personalities all mingling in one shared space. One woman was so moved by the vibe, she burst into song (yes, really!). A small group gathered in a corner to practice energy and relaxation movements, adding a gentle rhythm to the evening. The food? Delicious. The water? Crisp and refreshing. The atmosphere? A mix of calm, curiosity, and quiet bravery.

This wasn’t just a party—it was a social experiment in kindness. A follow-up survey is making the rounds to see how attendees felt: Did the event help ease their social anxiety? Did they feel supported by the volunteers? Did the evening spark any new connections or confidence? The answers will help shape future events—and yes, we’re already dreaming up the next one.

Our goal is to keep creating spaces where mental health isn’t a barrier to belonging, but a reason to build community. Whether it’s a twist on a classic mixer or something totally new, we’re always open to fresh ideas. Got a concept for an event? Want to be part of the next one? Let’s talk.

Because friendship shouldn’t be scary—and with a little intention, even the most anxious among us can find their people.
