End of Summer Barter Party: A Cozy Celebration of Community and Exchange
On a cool, sunny Sunday, September 21st, City Voices teamed up with Fountain House to host something delightfully unconventional: The Barter Party 2025. Held in the welcoming living room space at Fountain House, this peer-led gathering was all about connection, creativity, and the joy of trading treasures—no money required.
Admittedly, the journey there was filled with anxious imaginings. Would people argue over the value of a half-loved plush toy? Would chaos erupt in a tug-of-war over a vintage jacket? Would stuffing fly like confetti in a thrift-store battle royale? Thankfully, reality was far more heartwarming than those dramatic daydreams.

With around ten attendees, the vibe was relaxed and friendly. Fountain House generously provided hot sandwiches and cold water, fueling the afternoon with comfort and care. The living room buzzed with laughter and curiosity as folks laid out their offerings: plush toys, books, toy swords, art supplies, electronics, video games, hats, jackets, and more. Each item came with a story, and each trade sparked a new connection.
There was no pressure to bring something extravagant—just something you were ready to pass on. One person left with books they’d been meaning to read. Another scored a toy sword for their gladiator games. As for me? I walked away with a woolen hat, a wooden spoon, and a bottle of men’s body wash—so I can smell irresistibly sexy for my girlfriend. Not bad for a Sunday swap.

What made the event special wasn’t just the stuff—it was the spirit. Everyone traded something and went home with something new. No arguments, no awkwardness, just a shared sense of generosity and play. It was a reminder that community doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, it’s as simple as saying, “Hey, I’ve got this—want to trade?”
We’re already dreaming about the next one. With more folks, more items, and maybe even a themed twist (Barter Bash: Costume Edition, anyone?), the possibilities are endless. If you’d like to help plan the next event—whether it’s another barter party or something entirely new—we’d love to hear from you.
