PIP: Drum Circle Literally Creates Great Vibes!
On Sunday afternoon, November 15th, 2025, the living room of Fountain House was transformed into a sanctuary of rhythm, laughter, and connection. In collaboration with City Voices, we hosted a drum circle that brought together community members for an unforgettable afternoon of music and meaning.
The warmth and comfort of Fountain House’s living room made the perfect setting—soft lighting, cozy seating, and a welcoming atmosphere that invited everyone to relax and let loose. Fountain House provided a generous spread of instruments: djembes, tambourines, hand drums, and assorted noise-makers. Everyone had something to play, and play we did! I personally rotated through at least five different instruments, each adding its own flavor to our collective groove.
To guide the experience, I used Microsoft’s AI Copilot to generate seven interactive activities tailored for drum circle participants. We completed all seven—and even invented new ones on the spot, thanks to the creativity and spontaneity of our group.

One standout was Storytelling with Sound. We went around the circle, each person sharing a story—some spoke about their week, others recounted personal experiences, and one woman described the music that shaped her life. After each story, the group responded with a chorus of rhythm and affirmation: “We hear you, we feel you, we acknowledge your experiences.” It was a powerful blend of listening and sonic empathy.
Another favorite was the Drum Freeze Game. Everyone played freely until someone shouted “Freeze!”—at which point all sound stopped. A soloist was then cued to play for ten seconds, spotlighting individual expression before the group resumed. This playful structure created waves of anticipation and delight.

Midway through, we paused for a stretch and hydration break. When we reassembled, we stood together and moved into Pulse & Improvisation, a 15-minute session of steady beats and freeform movement. Guided by a volunteer, we explored dynamics: “Let’s get quieter… now louder… now just tambourines… now just drums.” The room pulsed with energy as people swayed, danced, and lost themselves in rhythm.
The vibe was electric. People laughed, listened, and let go. The drum circle became more than an event—it was a living, breathing organism of joy and connection. As we wrapped up, the most common question was, “When can we do this again?”

If you missed this round, don’t worry—more events are on the horizon. Whether you’re a seasoned drummer or just curious to try something new, we welcome you with open arms and open hearts.
